Dedications are a way to focus the growth of your civilization at the start of each Era, beginning in the Classical Era. The list of Dedications available at the start of an Era changes over the course of the game, and some Dedications are available through multiple Eras. During a Dark Age, Dedications are a reliable way to increase your Era Score as you work towards a Heroic Age. As you enter a Golden Age, these Dedications become more powerful, no longer granting Era Score, but now providing substantial bonuses to your civilization.
